Brushing and cleaning between your teeth are the foundations of daily oral care. These simple habits can support your teeth and gums between visits. Your dentist can help you adapt your routine to your own needs.

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste

Brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Use gentle pressure. If brushing hurts or your gums bleed, speak with your dentist rather than brushing harder.

Clean between your teeth every day

The ADA also advises cleaning between your teeth every day. A toothbrush does not reach the spaces between teeth, so people use floss or interdental brushes. Ask your dentist which one suits the gaps in your mouth. You can read more about general dentistry in Shellharbour before you ask.

Drink tap water and cut back on sugar

The ADA says fluoride added to tap water helps keep teeth healthy, and it advises avoiding sugary foods and drinks. It counts added sugar, honey, syrup and fruit juice as sugary. Ask your dentist whether the water where you live has added fluoride.

Keep up with regular check-ups

The ADA recommends regular dental check-ups. How often is right for you depends on your teeth, your gums and your health, so ask your dentist when to come back. If you are due for a visit, contact the Shellharbour clinic. Ask what your appointment includes and what it costs before booking.
