Your Smile

How do I start a conversation about my smile?

If you are considering a change to your smile, we start by checking your teeth and discussing what you would like to change. Our porcelain veneers information explains thin coverings placed over the front of teeth. Preparation may remove some natural tooth, so ask about the lasting changes and future maintenance before deciding.

Which cosmetic options can I compare?

If you are thinking about the colour of your teeth, our teeth whitening information lists the questions to ask. If straightening is on your mind, see orthodontics. Oral health usually comes first, so a dentist may check your teeth and gums before talking about appearance.

What comes first in a treatment plan?

If you would like to change more than one thing, ask the dentist to explain the order of treatment, which changes are cosmetic and which are needed for the health of your teeth and gums, and how you will both decide when the work is finished.

What will it cost and need over time?

Before you decide, ask what each option costs and what upkeep it needs. Our dental fees page lists guide prices, and our new patient offers page lists current offers, including smile makeover consults, so ask which apply to you. If you would like to spread the cost, see the payment options. You can also read the frequently asked questions or contact the clinic with your own.

This page is general information, so please call the clinic on (02) 4216 9911 to ask about your options, or contact our team. Cosmetic work can be big, so you can take time to decide, ask for a second opinion or choose to do nothing.

What should I know about whitening before I ask?

A dental professional can assess your teeth before whitening and explain the risks and likely limits.

  • What it cannot change: Whitening gel only lightens natural enamel, so it will not change the colour of porcelain crowns, veneers or white fillings.
  • In-chair whitening: This is done at the clinic with a strong hydrogen peroxide gel and often a light over the teeth.
  • Take-home whitening: Some people are also given take-home whitening to use under their dentist's supervision.
  • Sensitivity: Whitening can make teeth sensitive to cold.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Whitening is not recommended, so mention either one when you ask.

What To Consider

Which questions will shape my plan?

  1. 01

What would I like to change?

Describe what you would like to discuss about your smile in your own words, and bring photos or examples of what you have in mind if that helps.

  2. 02

Should my teeth and gums come first?

Your teeth and gums may need attention before cosmetic options are considered.

  3. 03

    Will it look natural?

Every smile is different, so what suits one person may not suit another.

  4. 04

    Will my teeth feel sensitive?

Ask what to expect afterwards. Whitening can make teeth sensitive to cold, sometimes severely, and veneers can leave a tooth more sensitive because some enamel is removed.

  5. 05

How does my existing dental work matter?

Tell the dentist about any fillings, crowns or veneers you already have, so they can discuss how whitening will affect them before treatment.

  6. 06

What upkeep should I plan for?

Veneers are brushed and flossed like natural teeth, and regular dental visits still matter. Ask what upkeep to plan for.

Your Consultation

What happens at a cosmetic consultation?

  1. 01

    Describe your goals

Share what has led you to ask about your smile and any questions you have.

  2. 02

    Mention what matters

Tell the dentist about your oral health history and anything you want to keep as it is.

  3. 03

    Ask about the options

Ask about the options, risks, timing and costs before you decide what feels right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about Cosmetic Dentistry

These general answers can help you prepare questions for an individual conversation.

Begin with what you want to understand, rather than choosing a treatment name. Cosmetic dentistry in Shellharbour can start with a discussion about one concern and the options for it. You can also decide to leave your appearance unchanged. An assessment helps separate personal preferences from problems needing dental care.
