Check Up and Clean

Check-up and clean in Shellharbour, why regular visits help find problems early

A check-up and clean lets a dentist look at your teeth and gums, remove plaque and tartar, and talk through anything you have noticed.

Fees, private health benefits and third-party payment arrangements vary. Please confirm current details before relying on an option.

Check Up and Clean

Is it time to book a check-up?

If it has been a while since your last dental visit, or you have bleeding gums or a sensitive tooth, a check-up is a sensible place to start. You can also book without symptoms. We check your teeth and gums and recommend when to return based on your needs. Read more about general dentistry in Shellharbour.

When should adults and children have check-ups?

Regular check-ups are advised for adults and children, even when teeth feel fine. Children can start from about 12 months of age or when their first teeth appear, so parents may like to read about kids dentistry. If dental anxiety has kept you away, ask about IV sedation before you book.

What does a first visit include?

At a first visit you can expect a comprehensive check-up, a clean and polish, and a personalised treatment plan. Digital X-rays, an OPG (a single full-mouth X-ray) and fluoride are included when you need them, and the team also takes a photo assessment.

What does the first visit cost?

New patients at a first appointment can be gap free or capped at $250 for adults and $200 for children. The children's cap is $150 where an OPG is not needed. Gap free means an eligible health fund that includes dental cover pays the visit, within the limits you have left. If your fund pays less than the cap, you pay the difference.

The offer cannot be used with another offer, and fees are subject to change. Fillings, further imaging or follow-up visits may cost more. For guide prices, start with the questions about dental fees, and read the patient offers and terms before you rely on an offer. If you would like to spread a cost, see the payment options.

What happens if I need treatment?

If the dentist finds something that needs care, such as a cavity or a gum change, you receive a written treatment plan before any treatment. You can take time to decide, ask for a second opinion or choose not to go ahead. Our tooth coloured fillings information and gum disease treatment information explain two common findings. Do not wait for a routine visit if you have pain, a swollen face or a damaged tooth. See the emergency dentist in Shellharbour page or contact the Shellharbour clinic. To book, use the Book An Appointment button or call (02) 4216 9911. Ask what the visit will cost before you agree to any treatment.

Who should book a check-up?

You do not need symptoms to have a check-up. These are common reasons people book one.

  • It has been a while: If you cannot remember your last visit, a check-up gives a dentist the chance to look for decay and gum changes. If you feel nervous about coming back, say so when you book so the team can plan the visit.
  • Bleeding or sore gums: Gums that bleed when you brush can be a sign of gum inflammation. A dentist can look and explain what they see, and what you can do at home.
  • A history of cavities or gum disease: Your past dental problems can affect how often you need a review. Ask what interval suits your teeth and gums.
  • Braces, dentures or other appliances: Ask the team to show you how to care for them and how to clean around them and between your teeth.

What happens at a check-up and clean?

At a check-up, we review your dental and medical history and examine your teeth, gums and mouth. A professional clean removes plaque and tartar; polishing or fluoride may be recommended.

We recommend X-rays only when they are clinically needed, with the type and timing based on your symptoms, examination and risk. Ask what an image is intended to show.

  • An examination: The dentist checks your teeth, gums and the soft tissues of your mouth, and asks about your medical history and any medicines you take.
  • A professional clean: Plaque and tartar are removed from around your teeth and gums, followed by polishing. Ask whether fluoride is recommended for you.
  • A talk about home care: You can ask about brushing, cleaning between your teeth and any habits that affect your mouth, such as sugary drinks or smoking.
  • A plan for next steps: If something needs treatment, the dentist explains your options, the likely cost and the timing before you decide. You can pause, compare options or decline, and a written treatment plan comes before treatment.

Questions about Check Up and Clean

These general answers can help you prepare questions for an individual conversation.

A check-up and clean in Shellharbour has two related purposes: finding out how your mouth is doing and removing deposits from your teeth. The examination informs the discussion about your care; the clean addresses plaque and tartar. Ask which parts are proposed for you and what the findings mean.
