Urgent Dental Concerns

What do I do first when something goes wrong?

Sudden tooth pain or a knock to the mouth can be frightening. When you call the clinic on (02) 4216 9911, say what happened, when it started and how bad the pain or swelling is. Mention any fever, the medicines you take and any health conditions. Emergency dental care is one of the services at Shellharbour Dentists, and for dental emergencies the team will offer out of hours treatment or try every possible way to see you on the same day, so call first.

Where do I find first aid for a tooth injury?

The first aid steps below cover a knocked-out tooth, a broken tooth fragment and a cut lip or gum. Arrange dental assessment after an injury. Our kids dentistry information also covers children’s dental visits.

What if I think I have an abscess?

A tooth abscess can cause throbbing pain, pain on biting, facial swelling, fever or a bad taste. It needs prompt dental or medical assessment. Treatment addresses the source and may include drainage, root canal treatment or removing the tooth; antibiotics may also be needed. A filling or crown may follow if the tooth is retained.

Contact your treating team if symptoms worsen or are not improving after treatment. Cracked, chipped or loose teeth can also be associated with grinding; our teeth grinding treatment information explains that concern. Once the urgent problem has been managed, a dental check-up and clean can help plan ongoing care.

What care and costs should I ask about?

This page is general information and cannot tell you what care you need. Our new patient offers page lists free emergency dental services for eligible patients with an NSW Oral Health voucher, and eligibility is checked. Ask about the likely cost before treatment starts, using our dental fees page and payment options, and ask for the options so you can decide what to do.

Wisdom teeth can cause pain or repeated gum infection. Our wisdom tooth removal information explains assessment and treatment options. Contact our team for advice about your symptoms.

What first aid helps until I can see a dentist?

These first aid steps support you while arranging professional care. They do not replace dental assessment.

  • Knocked-out adult tooth: Aim to reach a dentist or hospital within 30 minutes, because it may still be possible to save the tooth up to 2 hours after the injury.
  • Handling the tooth: Hold the tooth by the crown, which is the white part you can see in your mouth, and avoid touching the root. If you cannot put it back, keep it in a little milk or saliva so it does not dry out.
  • Knocked-out baby tooth: Do not put it back in. Rinse your child's mouth with salt water and ask the clinic what to do next.
  • Broken piece of tooth: Place the piece in milk or sterile saline and take it to your dentist.
  • Cut lip or gum: Press a clean towel or dressing on it to help stop the bleeding, and use a cold compress on the side of the face for swelling.
  • Toothache with swelling, fever or bad breath: A tooth abscess will not go away on its own, so see a dentist or doctor as soon as possible.

Helpful Details

What details help the clinic most?

  1. 01

    What happened?

Explain when the problem started or how an injury happened, as accurately as you can.

  2. 02

    What have I noticed?

Share changes such as pain, swelling, bleeding or damage to a tooth.

  3. 03

    Which health details are relevant?

Tell the clinic about health conditions, medicines or recent dental care, and mention any fever, because fever can be a sign of infection.

  4. 04

Do I have the tooth or the piece?

If a tooth was knocked out or broken, bring it with you, stored as described above, and say how long ago the injury happened.

  5. 05

Is it an adult or a baby tooth?

For a child, say their age and whether the tooth was a baby tooth or an adult tooth, because the first aid is different.

  6. 06

    How is it going?

After treatment, note whether the pain, swelling or fever is easing. If it is not improving, tell the clinic so they can decide whether you need more checks.

  7. 07

How do I get care quickly?

Ask the clinic whether to come straight in. If you cannot reach a dentist after a knocked-out adult tooth, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
